Several Versions of SAP Crystal Reports have reached or are approaching their end-of-life(EOL) – What Businesses Need to Know
For years, Crystal Reports has been a trusted tool for creating business reports. But now, with several older versions, SAP has officially started phasing out support, signaling the end-of-life status for several Crystal Reports versions and pushing organizations toward modern reporting and analytics platforms.
End-of-life status by version:
Crystal Reports 2016: Mainstream support ended in December 2022, and full support ended in December 2024.
Crystal Reports 2020: Mainstream support ends on December 31, 2026.
Crystal Reports for Enterprise: Mainstream support will end in 2027. This version will be removed from the SAP Business Intelligence 2025 release.
Crystal Reports for Visual Studio: The developer version has also reached its end of support, with the 2010 version ending support in December 2022.

Are Crystal Reports Discontinued?
The answer is: not completely, but support is winding down.
- Crystal Reports 2016: Mainstream support ended in 2022, with full support ending in 2024.
- Crystal Reports for Enterprise: Scheduled to be removed entirely from SAP Business Intelligence in the 2025 release.
- Crystal Reports 2020: Still supported, but only until the end of 2026.
Meanwhile, platforms like Blackbaud have also stopped allowing users to create or edit new reports with Crystal Reports, though legacy reports can still run.
This trend highlights the shift away from outdated reporting systems toward modern business intelligence (BI) solutions that are faster, cloud-ready, and built for real-time analytics.
Why SAP Is Retiring Crystal Reports
There are three main reasons SAP is sunsetting Crystal Reports:
- Product Simplification: Consolidating BI products under fewer, modern solutions.
- Outdated Technology: Limited scalability, poor cloud integration, and a dated interface.
End of Support Risks: Unsupported systems create compliance, stability, and cybersecurity risks.
Crystal Reports Alternatives in 2025 and Beyond
With the end of Crystal Reports support, businesses need to explore stronger BI platforms. Popular Crystal Reports alternatives include:
- Power BI – Best for interactive dashboards and cloud-based reporting.
- Tableau – Powerful data visualization and analytics features.
- SAP Analytics Cloud – SAP’s modern replacement for Crystal Reports.
- Jasper Reports, BIRT, Pentaho – Strong open-source reporting options.
SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) – A Microsoft-native solution for structured reporting.

- Crystal Reports 2016: Support ended in 2024.
- Crystal Reports for Enterprise: Will be removed in 2025.
- Crystal Reports 2020: Supported until the end of 2026.
The best alternatives to Crystal Reports include Microsoft Power BI, Tableau, SAP Analytics Cloud, JasperReports, Pentaho, and SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS). These tools offer advanced reporting, interactive dashboards, data visualization, and business intelligence features to help organizations analyze and present data more effectively.
SAP is simplifying its product portfolio, focusing on modern BI platforms with better cloud support, scalability, and real-time analytics. Older versions of Crystal Reports have outdated technology and present security risks once support ends.
Migration involves assessing your existing reports, choosing the right alternative (Power BI, Tableau, SAP Analytics Cloud, etc.), and redesigning reports for scalability and interactivity.
